Hidden deep in a warren of pretty residential mews in Knightsbridge village, just two minute's stroll from Harrods, the Swag & Tails is the perfect retreat after a hard day's shopping.

Beyond its magnificent, flower-adorned façade lies a civilised yet informal bar, with original panelling, stripped wooden floors and open fires and, to the rear, a cosy, quieter dining area. Business suits, shoppers and well-heeled locals quickly fill the bar at lunchtime, attracted by the welcoming atmosphere and the modern, Mediterranean-style dishes listed on a constantly changing blackboard menu.

Pop in to peruse the papers over a pint and an excellent sirloin steak sandwich, or linger longer over something more substantial. Follow warm duck liver and chorizo salad or grilled sardines with roasted vegetables and pesto bread, with chargrilled calf’s liver with Parmesan mash, fennel, chorizo and balsamic jus, baked mackerel fillet with coriander cous cous, or braised leg of lamb with tomatoes, basil and pancetta. Finish with pear tatin and nutmeg ice cream, date sponge with caramel sauce, or a plate of Scottish cheeses with pear and date chutney. Good coffee and an interesting list of wines with useful tasting notes; 12 offered by the glass including decent house champagne.
